Ultimate Indubtable question

We planned a "full-immersion" photo-session in one amazing park in Rome. Everything wad ready, cameras, batteries were fully charged, all the stuff was ready, backstage shootings and model (Martina) included.
But "Giove pluvio" was not with us and wind and rain destroyed all our schedule: all the day long at home :(
And here comes the idea: take the chairs upstairs, remove the furniture, move the table from here there, prepare Martina and then have fun with all the post-it.
And this is how the "Ultimate Indubitable Question" was born.

Zefram on "Fotografare" (Italian magazine)

I sent a video to the editorial staff of "Fotografare", the best-seller Italian photographic magazine.
By the way, the video is this one: http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=IG8FIkwXVGU
Well, they contacted me a few days after and we arranged a thing: not the "usual" portfolio, but a six pages article about the "how the image is born and how is made". A sort of backstage.
The article, written by Lorenzo Abbate, has been published on the January 2011 issue.
Very interesting for me, also because it is the very first time that I explain my "backstage" techniques.

A matter of time and lullabies

The man standing in front of the forthcoming future.
It is not a dark or uncertain future, there is light, limpid sky, a convergence of hopes.
But he's leaving the magic world of his childhood. The miracles are over and the sound of lullabies is vanishing below the new noise rising in the background.
Made in Kefalonia, wonderful Greek island in 2010. By the way, in the water there were a lots of little crabs and (SIGH!) I suffer from arachnophobia. Not a pleasant situation.

May I suggest to you "Potpourri magazine" ?

It is a brand new photographic and, more generally, visual-art magazine. Written in both English and Italian.
I like it: it is fresh, new, well designed and, more important, full of interesting contents coming from the "normal authors", people coming from the web and not picked up from Galleries and promoted by the market or by the "art academies".
It has a normal paper (recycled paper) version (four issues a year) and a web version (one issue a month).
I encourage you to give a glance to the magazine site.

New video: Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
Zefram photography as video-track of the Floyd's masterpiece "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun".
Other words are not worth.
The afterglow of the children's final fairy tale

Uh, well, ... what to say ?
There are two reading keys for image.
It could be seen as a translation into an image of the Pink Floyd's song "Childhood's end". Indeed everyone can see that this image is from a fairy tale, a strange one of course. But it is not the beginning if the tale. This is not the "once upon a time ...". It seems tailored to represent the final tale, after which no other children's fairy tale can be written. The "children's final fairy tale", indeed.
But the story is only apparently in the sunlight, maybe it is lived on the edge of the last ray of light or just after it. The afterglow of the tale.
But I told that there are two reading keys. The above was the former. The latter is maybe simpler: I was diving under 2300 feet in the deep ocean (I'm a skilled scuba diver) and suddenly two dolphins appeared, jumping all around me. At the same time the well-known ball-fishes (very curious fishes, you know) come to give a glance to this unusual scenario, making it even more unusual. I was lucky: I had with me my camera (yeha, you guessed right, water resistant) and I was fast enough to freeze all this in the image you see.
Fantastic day, that day !

Air attacck to hay bales and collateral damages

Terrible story.
I decided to try the career of war photo journalist and thus I moved to the "hot" area of the front fire line.
I knew the general situation, but I did not expect it to be hard and merciless in that way.
I have been the witness of an attack carried out by the air forces against the hay bales. A sudden, terrible attack with overwhelming forces against the two poor hay bales.
Despite the high-tec equipment, claimed to have surgical capabilities, achieving zero collateral victims, as you can see some collateral effect has been suffered.
Or maybe nothing of the above is true.
The aircrafts are just joking and having fun making acrobatic evolutions around the hay bales and the human on the grass is probably taking a sunbath or maybe is just sleeping. And Tweety is looking at the happy and amusing situation.
Or maybe not: it is a real bloody war scene. Or not ? Maybe? Yes. No. Hu ! !
Margarita Brenner-Grigorova: a remarkable artist

I found the artwork of Margarita on photo-forum.net and I have to confess that I'm still astonished for her fantasy, creativity, irony.
Images with a constant smile, with an eternal joke, taking you by hand in a real world made of unreal and unexpected characters and situations.
Margarita's art is the thin edge beyond which you enter in Alice's wonderland, in a realm made of vivid and limpid dreams, with surprises hiding behind each corner.
I strongly suggest you to fruitfully employ one hour of your time and travel across her world in her portfolio on photo-forum.

Dolphin's starvation

A funny day (but damn hot: it was June 25th).
We were at work, with my colleagues Maciej and Gianpaolo.
I spotted this location a few days before: it is just beneath the ancient walls of Rome, close to Porta Metronia. Of course you would expect to see the ancient walls, but .... no way, those ruins play no role in this image. The site was so simple and straightforward to be suitable enough for this image.
We took the tables, the dishes, the balls and the inflatable dolphins, along with a lot of other stuff you don't see in the image (all the stuff is on the grass behind the camera). maciej made a lot of work in moving tables, keeping nylon wires hanging balls and fixing the dolphins. Giampaolo spent all the time in taking images and videos, thinking to make a "The making of Dolphin's starvation", to be shared on Youtube or elsewhere. Maciej worked hard and you could have made a time fix with a precision similar to an atomic clock, because on a 5-minutes time basis, he continuously repeated "Damn, here is really hot". Hu .... well, he was right ...it was really hot.

No man's land

You can walk in a land of "magnets and miracles", but paying no attention to all of them.
Every given day we walk in the amazing world of our mind, where every miracle id possible and where the impossible is the ordinary way of how things happen. However we are too busy and folded into ourselves to recognise that the every dream is real and into ourselves.
And this land belongs to no man.
Extreme starvation breakfast

This is the very first attempt with the brand new Canon 7D.
It belongs to the "Psychedelic home project" and it has been quite difficult to make, especially to keep the forks spoons and knives still on the body of the model (those on the wall were easy).
In my view the model posture is perfect to represent the boredom and "out-of-context" mood that was intended to have in this image.
Of course there is an extreme starvation in there.

Berenika: an outstanding artist

This post is dedicated to Berenika, a dreamer from Poland.
Her images are unexpected dreams coming out from one of the most creative eyes ever seen.Things transform above their meaning and the poetry translates into echoes of images beyond their interpretation. The viewer of Berenika's images are taken into an impossible universe of possible things.
I strongly suggest to go throughout her images and become a part of her unique universe.

In the sparkling sheds

During the Christmas holidays, waking on the beach, I noticed these sheds.
It was a real unreal day, with a stormy weather, stormy clouds and wet all around. But there was a shining light and all around was bright.
This crazy instant before the sunset led me to the vision of this image.
All is so real to seem unreal, so flowing to seem frozen.
And the image come and you can see it now.
I hope to have been able to transfer the feelings of that moment.

Echoes of a distant tide (II)
The making of this image has been a real enterprise. The location is very difficult to reach: no roads, no direct access .... you have to walk on the rocks a long time and then walk in the water (1 m depth, luckily).
As far as you do it just with a camera ... no problem. But when you have with you guitars, tripod and a suitcase with lot of things stuffed in it .... well, it becomes quite cumbersome.
To keep the guitars in the right position was really difficult; the sand was like mud and the tripod was very unstable. Nevertheless all was done and after 40 mins. or so the mission was accomplished.
It was time to go away ... I was putting all the things in the case ... when I heard a sound like "splash" and then "zzzzzzz ...... clack clack".
Guess what ?
The tripod, with the camera (and the 10mm) still mounted on it, splashed in the salty water and the camera started to do every sort of crazy things.
At the end of the day, this has been my most expensive photograph ever.

Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast (II)
This is an old image and I love it because of a specific matter.I set up the stage at my mother's and the legs you see belong to a friend of mine: Ottavio Caiazzo, a wonderful person with a kind, friendly attitude, open to life and capable to see the good part hidden in anything, doesn't matter how nasty it is.
Ottavio was killed by the sea many years ago.
But he's still alive in my soul, as well as in the memory of all people who, in a way or the other, come in touch with him.
